Breastfeeding is natural, but that doesn’t mean it is always easy — especially in the early days. One of the most common challenges new mothers experience is cracked or sore nipples. At Ubuntu Mother & Baby Care, we want mothers to know that this is common, manageable, and not something you have to suffer through in silence.
What Are Cracked Nipples?
Cracked nipples are nipples that become sore, dry, broken, or painful during breastfeeding. They may bleed slightly or feel tender during and after feeds. This often happens in the first days or weeks of breastfeeding, particularly while both mother and baby are still learning.
Why Do Cracked Nipples Happen?
The most common causes include:
Poor latch or positioning
Baby not taking enough of the areola into the mouth
Frequent feeding without proper attachment
Engorged breasts making latching difficult
Dry skin or irritation
Cracked nipples are usually a sign that something needs adjusting — not that breastfeeding should stop.
What Can Help Heal Cracked Nipples?
Check the latch: A deep, comfortable latch is key. Pain is not normal and should be addressed early.
Air-dry nipples after feeds: Breastmilk itself has healing properties.
Apply a safe nipple cream: Use products recommended by a healthcare professional.
Avoid harsh soaps or alcohol-based products on the nipples.
Seek support early: Small adjustments can make a big difference.
Should I Stop Breastfeeding?
In most cases, no. With the right support, cracked nipples usually heal while breastfeeding continues. Stopping breastfeeding suddenly may increase discomfort and affect milk supply.
However, if pain is severe or nipples are not healing, professional assessment is important.
